Book of the month: What makes the great great?

When I was in college, I had the pleasure of attending a conference in Cincinnati, Ohio for students of color from all around the United States. The guest speakers list consisted of many notable educators and activists including Dick Gregory, Jawanza Kunjufu, Na’im Akbar and Dr. Dennis Kimbro. During the conference I attended a book signing where Dr. Kimbro was autographing copies of his new book (at the time) — “What Makes the Great Great: Strategies for Extraordinary Achievement” (one of my favorite books in my collection). When I opened the pages of this book in my early 20s it was in some ways life changing.

“If you wish to control your life, it is imperative that you gain a basic understanding of who you are.” — Dr. Kimbro

In the book, Dr. Kimbro introduces readers to the stories of African Americans from all walks of life who achieved extraordinary things against all odds. Through each story, he takes readers on a journey with excerpts from the individuals highlighted. This anecdotal style of writing provides readers with insight into the thought process it takes to manifest a dream from concept to reality. The book is educational as much as it is inspiring. This is a book about faith, tenacity, triumph and success. When exploring what makes the great great in the pages of this book, the reader is presented with many questions they need to answer in reference to their own journey to greatness. You can purchase the book from Amazon.com.
